Chilson has a large group of seasoned married couples who have pledged
to support newly-wed couples. Currently, there are 11 mentor couples.
At Chilson, we want to help bring down the high divorce rate in our
country.
Every couple who wants to get married through Chilson Hills must agree
to meet with a mentor couple. Once a couple agrees then they are given
a Myers-Briggs personality test free-of-charge by our pastor.
Afterwards, they are assigned a mentor couple who will meet with them
for between six and seven sessions of pre-marital counseling using
material prepared by Focus.
Focus is an in-depth program which helps our newlyweds to focus on
every aspect of the marriage relationship. I doubt if there is a
question left unasked.
After the wedding is over, our mentor couples also pledge to be
available to their couple in the years ahead. It has been our
experience that after doing this for seven years that sometimes a
couple who have now been married for awhile might call their mentor
couple and say, "We have lost our way. Can you help us?"
I can tell you from experience that it is very rewarding to be in a
position to help a couple get through a tough spot in their marriage
that before might have only gotten worse and ended in divorce. A mentor
couple is not family nor are they friends who would be biased. The
mentor couple has already spent a great deal of time with the couple
and developed a sense of trust and they also know the couple's
personality and the issues they were dealing with before they got
married.
The mentor couples work for free; they are unbiased and they are in a perfect position to offer help.
